The Education Geriatrics Ecological Agriculture Tourism Foundation (EGET), which operates in Muğla, provides scholarships to students with a portion of the income from the sale of olive oil purchased from local people. EGET Foundation is home to a variety of products including Lavender, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Ornamental Plants.

Stating that they have provided scholarship support to students so far, Özlem Uzman, Member of the Board of Founders and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of EGET Foundation, said: “Education, Geriatrics, Ecological Agriculture, Tourism (EGET) Foundation was established on 25-July-2015 by Safai Özer and Özlem Uzman in Muğla. The most important purpose of the EGET Foundation, which is referred to as ‘unchangeable’ in the Foundation deed, is to provide financial support to students who have difficulties in continuing their education due to financial difficulties, thus serving the cultural and scientific development of society. In addition to this purpose, we also attempt to create new development models through innovative systems in ecological and sustainable agricultural practices. We want to pay close attention to nature conservation and encourage eco-tourism, farm tourism and wellness tourism – in short, sustainable tourism. We plan to make investments focused on geriatrics and gerontology.”

“WE PREFERRED TO BE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS”

President Özlem Uzman said, “How we would ensure the continuity of EGET Foundation scholarships was an issue we thought long and hard about before we even established the Foundation. Instead of being a non-governmental organization that tries to survive only by requesting donations, we preferred to establish a structure that creates its own revolving capital with the projects it develops and the investments it makes, and to be a -social entrepreneur- in its current definition. For this purpose, we established the EGET Foundation Economic Enterprise shortly after we established the Foundation. The EGET Foundation Economic Enterprise has achieved many firsts in a short period of time. It established the largest and first private truffle business in Turkey. It created the first lavender field in coastal cities. It also entered the cosmetic products market and introduced cosmetic products approved by the Ministry of Health with the oil of its own lavender. The achievements of the EGET brand were not limited to this: The early harvest unfiltered extra virgin olive oil sold by our Economic Enterprise under the brand EGET Kuzluk in the EGET Food category was awarded the silver medal among 700 brands from 23 countries at the International Olive Japan 2020 Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition in Japan. In addition, we also sell lavender seedlings in the EGET Agriculture category, which we offer for sale with the approval certificates we have received from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and the Ornamental Plant Producer Association. All income from the sales of EGET Foundation Economic Enterprise is transferred to EGET Foundation scholarships. However, of course, EGET Foundation also has regular donors. Since the 2016-2017 academic year, when we started to give our first scholarships, we have given scholarships to 110 students. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the number of students we gave scholarships to reached 62. We provide each student with a scholarship of 350 TL per month; nine months a year until the end of their university education.”

“WE THINK THAT SCHOLARSHIPS SHOULD CONTINUE DURING THE PANDEMIC”

Safai Özer, another Founders’ Board Member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of EGET Foundation, said, “To date, 32,243 students have applied for EGET Foundation scholarships. Since the first year we started awarding scholarships, application evaluations have been carried out through a software developed entirely by EGET Foundation in line with our Scholarship Regulation, with an information system that eliminates human error. With our software, which we call ‘BUSED’ (Scholar Selection Evaluation System), we have the opportunity to process, evaluate and report thousands of data accurately, easily and quickly, in accordance with the criteria set by our Education and Scholarship Commission. We believe that scholarships should continue, especially during the pandemic. Therefore, the answer to your question is yes, in fact, the number of our students increased from 34 last year to 62 in the 2020-2021 academic year. A research shows that 34 percent of university students do not have a computer, tablet or internet connection. In this period of distance education, it is precisely now that these students need our support. Many of the students we provide scholarships to do not have computers at home, and many of those who have smartphones have to share their phones with their siblings in order to participate in education.”

“WILL REACH EDUCATED YOUTH”

Safai Özer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of EGET Foundation, said: “Since the day we established EGET Foundation, we have only one goal; that is to increase the number of students we provide scholarships to and thus serve the development of our beautiful country. Because we fully embrace Atatürk’s quote “Education is what makes a nation either live as a free, glorious and high community or leave it to bondage and misery.” and we strongly believe that this country will reach its rightful place with educated young people.” Özlem Uzman, Member of the Board of Founders and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the (EGET) Foundation, said: “As a foundation, it is a great feeling to produce agricultural products that meet the needs of the age, to create exemplary agricultural enterprises for local farmers, and to touch the lives of the students to whom we provide scholarships with the income generated. We will continue to work devotedly on this path. We call on everyone to be more sensitive and to support not only the EGET Foundation but also other non-governmental organizations like us who are committed to education.”
