I HAVE A MENTOR
The I Have A Mentor project was developed by the EGET Foundation Board of Directors in line with the suggestion of Mr. Umut Bekir Ürkün. Upon the successful completion of the first pilot application in 2017-2018, it was decided to implement a comprehensive pilot application in the 2018-2019 academic year.
What is ‘I have a mentor’ Project?
It is a project developed by the EGET Foundation in order to help volunteer professionals experienced in business life, specialized in their profession, to establish a bond with successful and open-minded young university students within the framework of respect, love and sharing principles. Thus, on the one hand, it is aimed for the student to develop his personal potential and set more concrete career goals by using the knowledge and experience of his guiding pioneer, and on the other hand, the pioneer will gain psychological and sociological gains from this sharing with a young individual while enjoying the happiness of being beneficial to a young person and therefore to the society.
FEATURES OF THE MENTOR:
The mentor is a person ho has proven himself as a respected individual in the society who is educated and experienced in her/his field, internalized the volunteer perspective, eager to share her/his experience and knowledge with the student, can contribute to the development of skills in line with the career goals of the student, can be a role model for the student in terms of professional and personality, is eager to spend time and effort for the student, has communication and problem solving skills.
FEATURES OF THE STUDENT:
She/he is a person who is open to learning and self-improvement, aware of the fact that this association is entirely based on volunteering, willing to cooperate with her pioneer, and who is aware that they will have achivements from this cooperation.
The Functioning of ‘I HAVE A MENTOR PROJECT’:
- The ‘students’ who will participate in the project are selected from third and higher grade students who have applied for EGET Foundation scholarships and who have achieved a GPA of at least 2.5 out of 4 and who have volunteered to take part in the project
- The “pioneers” to take part in the comprehensive pilot application are selected and determined by the Board of Trustees of the EGET Foundation who are suggested and referred by the Advisory Board or by the volunteers.
- Twinning is carried out by the EGET Foundation.
- The duration of the project is one academic year. ‘Mentor- Student’ meeting can continue, if they wish, after the end of an academic year.
- The families of the students who want to take part in the project send a written document stating that they approve the student’s participation in the EGET Foundation’s “I Have a Mentor ” project.
- If the mentor is married, his wife/husband also gives written notice that the she/he has consent that her/his husband/wife to take part in this project.
- The Mentor-Student meeting is set between them to occur at least once a month.
- Face-to-face interviews are held in public settings that are determined by the joint decision of ‘Mentor’ and ‘Student’.
- Dealing with topics that express politics, religion and ideological views should definitely be avoided in the meetings.
- Both ‘Mentor’ and ‘Student’ should approach each other with trust, loaffection and respect.
- The mentor is obliged to send the meeting notes to the program officials via e-mail after each meeting.
- At least every three months and when deemed necessary by the EGET Foundation Board of Directors, the Mentor’ and’ Student ‘agree to participate in the meetings to be held at different times and on the internet in order to observe the flow of the project, improve it and develop the project.
WHO CAN BE A MENTOR?
- Having at least ten years of work experience
- Realized the importance of the project and eager to volunteer
- If married, who has the consent of her/his spouse
- Have time for a face-to-face meeting at least once a month during an academic year
- Those who agree to participate in online interviews to improve and develop the project before, during and after the program.
WHO CAN BE A STUDENT?
- Those who have applied for EGET Foundation scholarships, have achieved a GPA of at least 2.5 out of 4 and are volunteers to take part in the project.
- Who brought a letter of approval from her/his family to take part in the project
- Agree to meet face-to-face with their ‘pioneer’ at least once a month.
- Undertaking to deliver the meeting notes after the meeting to the program officials.
- ‘Benefiting from the time reserved by the pioneer for her/his in the most efficient way and in a way that will contribute to her/his personal and professional development.
- ‘Being open to communication with her/his mentor and prone to cooperation.
